About

They Feed Us Poison refers to an exploitable three-panel image macro with the text "They feed us poison / So we take their 'cures' / While they suppress our medicine." In the original image, "poison" is represented by burgers, "cures" is represented by pills, and "medicine" is represented by marijuana. In the edits, the "medicine" is changed to something humorous or surreal.

Origin

The original image features a watermark for @CaliforniaWeedBlog, a marijuana community active on Facebook[1] and Instagram.[2] However, the post is no longer extant on their social channels. The earliest known extant post of the image was posted June 28th, 2018 by the Facebook page Drug Possession Laws,[3] where it gained over 1,200 reactions and 1,300 shares (shown below).

Spread

The image spread outside the marijuana community as people remarked on its cringeworthy nature, being mocked in subreddits such as /r/im14andthisisdeep[4] and /r/insanepeoplefacebook.[5] On February 26th, 2019, Redditor shenjoey7429 posted the image with an ironic Gang Weed caption and an iFunny watermark to /r/4panelcringe (shown below, left). On March 13th, 2019, Instagram user cumcumcumcumcumcumcumcum posted a parody with a painting of a dog in the third panel, gaining over 2,300 points (shown below, right). On March 15th, the meme was covered by Digg.[6]
