Thex

About

Thex refers to a hypothetical name proposed for a World of Warcraft character by a Reddit user in anticipation of the World of Warcraft Classic character creator. The Reddit user posted that they were excited to name their character Thex, prompting other Redditors to say that they too were going to name their character Thex. This led to several jokes and parodies around the character "Thex" to spread on Reddit.

Origin

On July 30th, 2019, Redditor LiterallyABlackBear^[1] posted in /r/classicwow that they were excited for the character creation feature in World of Warcraft Classic to be released in two weeks time. He asked members of the subreddit to post their ideas for characters' names, stating, "I am Thex, Troll Shaman."

Spread

In response to the post, users commented that they would also be "Thex." User Ashbury_SF posted, "Thex sounds pretty cool. I'll go with that." User EbonTitan posted "Thanks for the name m8." The popularity of the post began spreading through the /r/classicwow subreddit, as users created image macros and other jokes about the character Thex. User Rhianolord^[2] posted a Homer Simpson in a Lesbian Bar parody about Thex's popularity, gaining over 1,700 points (shown below, left). User Kaiser_Fiffi posted a Weird Flex But Okay joke about the name, gaining over 220 points (shown below, right).^[3]

On August 12th, LiterallyABlackBear reported that user mipeirong had reserved the name Thex and would be giving it to them once the Thex craze had died down among the fandom.^[4]
