About
There Will Be X At The Function, sometimes stylized There Will Be X At The Functio-, is a phrasal template that uses a variation of the White People At The Function meme and changes it to be more personally about the person's response to the news that something specific will be at the function. The meme setup, coming shortly after other function-related memes like When the Function Got X and When the Function Doesn't Have X, has been used throughout 2023 and 2024 to show an uncontrollable amount of glee coming from an individual.
Origin
In early 2023, the meme about how "white people act at functions" began to spread, with it then beginning to branch away from being exclusively about white people and starting to be about other types of groups. On March 7th, 2023, X user @CryptidD0g[1] uploaded a GIF of a dog with the caption stating, "there will be cheerwine at the function" and claiming that the dog running around is "me af," earning over 40 likes in one year (shown below).
The format then changed over the next few months, shedding the need to claim "me" as it became more inherently implied, with the punchline being an attached media clip showcasing someone or something moving very fast off-camera to simulate how excited and quick-moving the OP is due to something being at the function.
On August 11th, 2023, X user @EdYuP134[2] uploaded the most common form of the meme, with a sped-up clip of Gabe D Silva sprinting down a sidewalk and captioning it as how he acts when goth girls will be at the function (shown below).
Spread
On November 22nd, 2023, TikToker justafewfellas[3] uploaded a TikTok of them first jogging to the caption "there will be alcohol at the function" before showing a full sprint to the caption "there will be overcoming toxic masculinity and talking about your feelings at the function" to showcase how different things at the function create a different level of need or desire, earning over 300 likes in two months (shown below).
At the start of 2024, the phrase began to receive more attention after it was attached to footage of a professional acrobat being launched over a large pool of water. The clip, slowing down while the acrobat is shown in mid-air, was used in several more examples of the meme.
For example, on January 14th, 2024, TikToker chris_b_creame[4] uploaded the footage while captioning it "there will be Shirley Temples at the functio-" with the ending being cut off to show how the person didn't wait for the ending before launching themselves at the function (shown below).
