The Weeknd's AMA Bandages refers to R&B singer The Weeknd appearing at the 2020 American Music Awards with his head wrapped in bandages. He was promoting his album After Hours by appearing as "The Character," the protagonist from the concept album. Images of The Weeknd from the awards show led to jokes about his appearance on social media.
Origin
At the 2020 American Music Awards, held November 22nd, 2020, The Weeknd appeared and performed in bandages as a way of promoting his album After Hours, which features his blood-splattered face on the cover (performance shown below).[1] He won three AMAs for favorite male artist, favorite album and favorite song ("Heartless").
Spread
The Weeknd's appearance led to jokes on Twitter. For example, user @zeugirdorarual[2] posted a joke quoting The Weeknd's "Can't Feel My Face," gaining over 640 retweets and 3,000 likes (shown below, left). User @94_OneR[3] joked that by the Super Bowl, where he's scheduled to perform, The Weeknd would be in a full-body cast, gaining over 900 retweets and 5,000 likes (shown below, right).
Others made comparisons to moments from SpongeBob SquarePants. For example, user @Phil_Lewis_[4] joked The Weeknd looked like Squidward when he was in a full-body cast, gaining over 500 retweets and 3,100 likes (shown below, left). User @nanibeanzzz[5] compared The Weeknd to the shady salesman from the SpongeBob episode "Chocolate With Nuts," gaining over 300 retweets and 2,200 likes (shown below, right).
