The Warrior is a song by American rock band Scandal featuring Patty Smyth on vocals. The song grew popular in the 1980s, hitting number 1 on the US mainstream rock chart. The song left a lasting impact on pop culture, and was used as the theme song for the Netflix series GLOW.

Origin

"The Warrior" was released on Scandal's lone album, Warrior, on August 21st, 1984.[1] The song was written by Nick Gilder and Holly Knight and features Patty Smyth on vocals. The song is a power-pop song best known for its chorus, "Shootin' down the walls of heartache, bang bang! I am the warrior!"


Spread

The song topped at number 7 on the US Billboard Hot 100.[2] It was used as the theme song for the Netflix show GLOW, which follows a women's wrestling promotion in the 1980s.


Patton Oswalt Tweets

On February 15th, 2019, comedian Patton Oswalt[3] started a thread of tweets which parodied the song's chorus by imagining other characters and phrases saying the "bang bang!" lyric. He started with Jackie Gleason saying "bang, zoom!", gaining over 160 retweets and 2,100 likes (shown below, left). He also made a joke using Star Wars Ewoks, gaining similar numbers[4] (shown below, right).


Other Twitter users joined in on the joke. For example, user @alsovalerie[5] tweeted a parody using the Law & Order "DUN DUN" noise, gaining 50 retweets and over 730 likes (shown below, left). User @BenHBailey[6] made a tweet using the Roadrunner "Meep Meep" noise from Looney Toons, gaining over 60 retweets and 730 likes (shown below, right). The tweets were covered by Twitter Moments.[7]
