About
The Vibe I Bring To The Function is a catchphrase used in memes that's commonly featured alongside reactions, usually showing a person's humorous behavior or actions when they accompany friends at an event. The trend is similar to the I Bring a Sort Of X Vibe to the Y phrasal template, going viral mainly on TikTok and Twitter / X in late February and early March 2024 with videos and TikTok photo slideshows typically used alongside the format.
Origin
On October 3rd, 2023, X[1] user @cupidshayne posted the earliest mention of the phrase "the vibe I bring to the function," showing a video of a co-worker eating at a separate table (shown below). The post amassed roughly 4,200 views and 196 likes in six months.
The earliest found memetic usage of the phrase was posted on TikTok[2] on January 22nd, 2024, by user @romulusedits, who posted a fan edit featuring actors Jeremy Strong, Michael Cera, Paul Dano and Nathan Fielder to express the vibe he brings to the function. The post (shown below) amassed over 164,000 plays and 35,000 likes in three months.
Spread
In February 2024 the trend was popularized further on the platform as people started to share videos and photo slideshows featuring awkward celebrity pictures or random memes to encompass the "vibe" they bring to a friend's gathering. For example, on February 28th, 2024, TikTok[3] user @all.hail.charles posted a series of photos of a dog in the slideshow format adding the overlay text "The vibe I bring to the function" in every picture (examples shown below), which amassed over 2.8 million plays and 625,000 likes in a month.
On March 9th, 2024, TikTok[4] user @theockytay posted a video wearing a blanket like the Bene Gesserit from the Dune universe paired with the overlay text, "The vibe I bring to the function." The video (shown below, left) amassed more than 731,000 plays and 176,000 likes in four days.
On March 11th, TikTok[5] user @marty..imscared posted the video of a man crouched next to a waterfall staring at the camera paired with the phrasal template. The post (shown below, right) received roughly 13,700 plays and 2,700 likes in a day.
