Origin

On July 24th, 2018, Watson tweeted [1] a video by conservative Allie Beth Stuckey, in which Stuckey is edited into a video interview with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. He captioned the video, "The right is starting to get better at comedy and it's making lefties nervous." Teh tweet received more than 3,000 retweets and 9,000 likes in less than one year (shown below).

Spread

Shortly after the post was made, critics of Watson began using the phrase as a criticism of conservative comedy, pairing his statement with other examples that critics do not find funny. For example, the following day, Twitter[2] user @classiclib3ral posted a photoshopped version of the tweet, replacing the interview video with an image of the conspiracy theorist Alex Jones dressed as a dog. The post received more than 490 retweets and 4,000 likes in six months (shown below, left).

Throughout the year, others used the tweet as either reaction images to examples of conservative comedy or as the thread title to examples. On October 25th, Twitter[3] user @nathanTbernard paired the tweet with a photograph of a man dressed as the I Sexually Identify as an Attack Helicopter meme. The post received more than 500 retweets and 3,800 likes in four months (shown below, center). Twitter[4] user @vadimnewquist paired the tweet with a series of images of men wearing wigs (shown below, right).
