About
The LGBTQ+ Community Has Forgiven DaBaby refers to a series of memes based on an image macro announcing that "the LGBTQ+ Community" has forgiven rapper DaBaby, originally shared by RapTV on Twitter and Instagram in November 2021. The memes parody the macro, announcing that various people and characters have been forgiven by the LGBTQ+ community by using the original caption as a phrasal template and replacing DaBaby with other names.
Origin
On November 2nd, 2021, celebrity news website TMZ[1] published an article titled, "Dababy: LGBTQ ORG OK WITH PERFORMANCE… But Condemns Chappelle." The article cited the CEO of non-profit LGBTQ+ organization Relationship Unleashed Gwendolyn D. Clemons who told TMZ that they were okay with DaBaby appearing at Rolling Loud the week before as "they feel he's learned a lot over the past few weeks. The report referenced accusations of homophobia that were put against DaBaby when on July 25th, 2021, the rapper made comments that were deemed homophobic and misogynistic.[2]
Given the opportunity to go forward and do better we believe our objectives were highly effective and yes, he deserved to perform at Rolling Lound in NY.
Later on November 2nd, 2021, celebrity news social media page RapTV shared a clickbait news image macro based on the article, which claimed that "the LGBTQ+ community has forgiven DaBaby." The original post has since been removed from Instagram (repost shown below).
Spread
In early November 2021, the macro shared by RapTV inspired memes on social media as people wondered who made the decision to forgive DaBaby on behalf of the entire LGBTQ+ community. For example, on November 2nd, 2021, Twitter[3] user @FallForMy made a post that gained over 22,600 retweets and 200,000 likes in seven months (shown below, left). Later on the same day, Twitter[4] user @LordBalvin made a tweet that gained over 14,900 retweets and 93,700 likes in a similar timeframe (shown below, right).
The macro did not spawn a meme format until May 13th, 2022, when Instagram[5] page __antiart__ shared a parody macro claiming that the LGBTQ+ community has forgiven rapper Kendrick Lamar, likely referencing the lyrics of his recently released song "Auntie Diaries" that sparked a controversy for using the slur "f****t." The post (shown below, left) gained over 1,000 likes in four days and was circulated through reposts.[6] On May 14th, Twitter[7] user @SmileyUnlimited shared another parody macro claiming that the LGBTQ+ community has forgiven Hector Salamanca from Breaking Bad. The post went viral and gained over 6,100 retweets and 112,400 likes in three days (shown below, right).
The post inspired more similar memes based on the macro to be shared in mid-May 2022.
