On February 26th, 2018, Sean Hannity tweeted a link to a YouTube video of painter Jon McNaughton creating a painting of Donald Trump hugging the American flag on an NFL field, the painter's reaction to the #TakeAKnee protests (shown below, top). With the video, Hannity wrote, "The “left” loves art, and especially taxpayer funded art that is “provocative”. Let’s get their reaction to this"[1] (shown below, bottom).

It's possible Hannity was referencing the liberal reaction to his qualms about The Obama's Official Presidential Portraits. Hannity infamously claimed there was "secret sperm" in Barack Obama's portrait, and he was mocked for the theory online.[2] Twitter user @brockwilbur responded to Hannity's tweet by suggesting McNaughton's depiction of yard lines on the NFL field resembled sperm (shown below, left). MSNBC host Chris Hayes replied to the tweet sarcastically, calling it "the most beautiful piece of art" he'd ever seen (shown below, right).

More commonly, people parodied the tweet by adding absurd paintings to the text, making jokes similar to the Before the Liberals Find a Reason to Deface This Statue meme. For example, Twitter user @pattymo posted the text with fan art of Wario, gaining over 180 retweets and 1,800 likes (shown below, left). Twitter user @carlbeijer posted fan art of Diaper Toad with the caption, gaining over 90 retweets and 1,000 likes (shown below, right). Jokes about the tweet were covered by several media outlets, including Huffington Post,[3] Daily Dot,[4] and The Wrap.[5]
