The Kardashians Are Buying TikTok refers to a viral rumor that the Kardashians, or Kim Kardashian specifically, are set to buy TikTok so that it doesn't get banned in the United States in January 2025. The rumor garnered viral spread on TikTok in mid-December 2024. Despite the virality of the story, the rumor has not been confirmed by any member of the Kardashian family and does not appear to be true.

Origin

On December 16th, 2024, TikToker^[1] @nevrcrd posted a video in which he claimed that TikTok was being bought by the Kardashians. He claims that the Kardashians "posted everywhere" that they're buying TikTok so it doesn't get banned in the U.S. in January 2025. The TikToker expresses his happiness that the family is buying the app. The video garnered over 385,000 views in a day.

Spread

On December 16th, 2024, several other TikTokers posted videos about the Kardashians buying TikTok, with many seeming to fall for the hoax. For example, that day, TikToker^[2] @famousslex posted a video discussing the allegation, wondering if North West Kardashian convinced Kim to buy the app, garnering over 149,000 views in a day.

The rumor was reported on by numerous media outlets on December 16th and 17th, including Tribune^[3] and Dexerto,^[4] with nobody able to verify the claims that the Kardashians are buying TikTok.
