The Horrors Are Endless, But I Stay Silly, sometimes phrased as The Horrors Are Never-ending, yet I Remain Silly, is a catchphrase that was popularized as a caption on image macros and other memes of animals or people in 2023.

Origin

On January 25th, 2023, Tumblr user junoinfernal^[1] posted, "the horrors are endless. but we stay silly :3," gaining over 79,000 notes in two and a half months (shown below). It appears they were quoting a maia arson crimew tweet that used the phrase "congress is investigating now, but I stay silly :3."^[2]

Spread

The phrase began seeing use on image macros in the following months. On February 25th, 2023, iFunny user tinasbeentaken^[4] posted an image of a dog with the phrase, gaining over 8,100 likes in two months (shown below, left). On March 13th, Redditor BECOST posted a deep-fried image macro with a variation of the phrase to /r/nukedmemes,^[3] gaining over 470 points in one month (shown below, right).

The phrase has also been used with pop culture characters. For example, on January 29th, 2023, Redditor terminatorofsand posted a still from The Shining referencing the meme in /r/196,^[6] gaining over 3,600 points in three months. On April 9th, the Twitter account @nocontextlestat^[5] posted the phrase over a picture of Lestat de Lioncourt from Interview with a Vampire, gaining over 70 retweets and 400 likes in four days (shown below, left).
