About
Is Wario a Libertarian? is a phrasal template inspired by a tweet from Twitter user Dril that reads, "'Is Wario A Libertarian' – the greatest thread in the history of forums, locked by a moderator after 12,239 pages of heated debate," [sic]. The tweet has become one of the most prevalently referenced Dril tweets on the platform, as posters have used it in memes that replace "Is Wario a Libertarian?" with a similarly trivial question.
Origin
On August 28th, 2011, Dril[1] tweeted, "'Is Wario A Libertarian' – the greatest thread in the history of forums, locked by a moderator after 12,239 pages of heated debate," gaining over 12,000 retweets and 27,000 likes in 12 years (shown below).
Spread
Over the following decade, the tweet became one of Dril's most popular, and developed into a prominent snowclone on the app, with people replacing "Is Wario a Libertarian" with a similarly trivial question. Some examples pre-2017 include a December 7th, 2015, post by Twitter user @shinjidril[2] that rephrased the question to be about Misato from Neon Genesis Evangelion, gaining over 140 retweets and 160 likes in seven years (shown below, left). On June 16th, 2016, Twitter user @spacetwinks[3] posted the snowclone with the question "does winston count as a furry," gaining over 20 retweets and 40 likes in seven years (shown below, right).
The snowclone has continued to see notable use well into the 2020s and particularly saw use as a way to mock viral hot takes on Twitter. For example, on January 18th, 2022, Twitter user @Halalcoholism[4] posted a joke referring to another user claiming Joseph Stalin was "west Asian" and not white, gaining over 190 retweets and 2,200 likes in a year (shown below, left). On March 16th, user @euangtaylor[5] posted the joke with the question "Is Mother's Day Catholic" in response to a controversy, gaining over 140 retweets and 1,400 likes in a year (shown below, right).
