About
The Girl Trying to Scare Me With Her New "Wednesday" Personality is a catchphrase used in a series of comparison memes that imagine a situation in which a girl who adopted the personality of the character Wednesday Addams (played by Jenna Ortega) from the 2022 Netflix series would get intimidated by a person sharing their personality with another character, usually a sociopath or a psychopath. Started by a viral American Psycho meme depicting Christian Bale's Patrick Bateman, the exploitable format achieved significant spread in late December 2022 as people edited in various characters on the right side with the caption "My personality."
Origin
On December 18th, 2022, iFunny[1] user throwaway_femboy posted a comparison meme portraying a girl who adopted the personality of the character Wednesday from The Addams Family spinoff series, and Patrick Bateman from the 2000 movie American Psycho, meant to represent the personality of the author of the meme. The post was featured on the app and gained over 7,300 smiles in one month (shown below).
Spread
On December 18th, 2022, the earliest derivative memes based on the format were then posted, with users replacing the second picture with various characters and historic figures. For example, on December 18th, Instagram[2] user patrick.monarchy.resurrected posted a Ted Bundy version of the meme that gained over 870 likes in one month (shown below, left). On December 23rd, Twitter[3] user @SonicDepressed posted a Shadow the Hedgehog version of the meme that received over 1,400 retweets and 10,700 likes in one month (shown below, right).
In late December 2022, the format entered its period of ironic use, as users humorously reinterpreted by replacing the second image with goofy characters. For example, on December 27th, Redditor TheSteelMercenary posted an Angry Birds version of the meme that gained over 11,100 upvotes on /r/okbuddyretard[4] in four weeks (shown below, left). On January 2nd, 2023, iFunny[5] user The_Duke_of_Nukem posted a Postal Dude / Kazuya Guy meme based on the format that garnered over 1,400 smiles on the app in three weeks (shown below, right).
The meme format maintained moderate popularity online in January 2023.
