About

The End of Evangelion Movie Poster Parodies refers to a series of memes that take the movie poster for the animated movie The End of Evangelion and change it around in a similar way to Akira Movie Poster Parodies. Since 2015, the series has had a large number of movie poster parodies made, often with the text of the movie also changed to match the background image being different.

Origin

Released on July 19th, 1997, in Japan, the movie poster features the ending scene of the film, with the characters Shinji and Asuka on a white beach staring off at the giant head of Rei following The Third Impact. The poster, one of several promotional materials made for the film, was later used as the English DVD cover art when it was brought over to America, often being associated with the film to the American audience.

On May 15th, 2015, one of the first poster parodies was uploaded to Tumblr by user shadow-user,[1] who made it into a poster about Nigel Thornberry from the animated show The Wild Thornberrys (shown below). The meme received over 100 notes in nine years.

Spread

Other Tumblr users began to pick up on the trend, with more movie poster parodies being made in the following years. On March 27th, 2016, Tumblr user waveygoth[2] created a version that used Lil B 'BasedGod' in which his head can be seen coming out of the water and the title was changed to be "Neon Genesis Basedgod" with an accompanying tagline of "the end of basedgod" (shown below). The post received nearly 10,000 notes in eight years.

In the years following, the meme began to grow with people using it as a way to symbolize an actual end to something. For example, when Twitter was acquired By Elon Musk, a lot of people were uncertain about the future of the company. When Twitter's Rebrand to X was announced, Twitter user @greatest_mei[3] took the opportunity to create a The End of Evangelion movie poster parody in which it was called "The End of Twitter" and replaced Rei's head with the old Twitter bird icon, earning over 275,000 views in one year (shown below).
