The Character / The Voice is a quote retweet trend on Twitter where voice actors post an image of a character they voiced that year next to a headshot of themselves, often quote-retweeting the last voice actor to participate in the thread to create a chain. The trend began in December 2021 and saw a resurgence in November 2022.

Origin

On December 30th, 2021, Twitter^[1] user @PatrickMealeyVO posted an image of a character he voiced, Gerald from Genshin Impact next to a photo of his headshot, encouraging other voice actors to "Post a pic of a character you got to voice this year along with your headshot," garnering over 200 likes in a year (shown below, left). By the end of the year, numerous other voice actors quote-retweeted^[2][3] the post with images of characters they voiced and their headshots, including actress Alejandra Reynoso, whose post gained over 3,000 likes in a year (shown below, right).

Spread

On November 28th, 2022, Twitter^[4] user and voice actor @Evanmichaellee quote-tweeted one of the posts with an image of Nagoriuki from Guilty Gear, garnering over 780 likes in a day (shown below).

The tweet reignited the trend as more voice actors quote-retweeted it. Some of the most popular additions to the chain were Twitter^[5] user @ProZD next to an image of Ratatoskr from God of War: Ragnarok, garnering over 26,000 likes in a day and Twitter^[6] user @SimplyAllegra, who voiced Beidou in Genshin Impact, garnering over 20,000 likes in a day (shown below, left and right).
