About
Thanos is a Marvel Comics supervillain known for battling against various superhero teams, including the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Fantastic Four and X-Men. The character gained much notoriety online for his role in the 2018 film Avengers: Infinity War.
Origin
In February 1973, Thanos first appeared in an issue of the comic The Invincible Iron Man (shown below). The supervillain was featured in various other comics and storylines in various Marvel comics over the next several decades, with his origin being revealed in a miniseries titled Thanos Rising in April 2013.
Backstory
In the Marvel comics[1], Thanos is revealed to have come from Saturn's moon Titan and has the Deviants gene. After becoming interested in nihilism and death as a teenager, Thanos gained strength and powers using scientific knowledge as an adult. In an attempt to impress his love interest Mistress Death, Thanos killed millions of his own race on Titan in a nuclear attack. In later stories, Thanos attempts to gain more power by securing powerful objects like the Cosmic Cube and the Infinity Gems.
Among his various powers, Thanos possesses superhuman strength and is frequently depicted as nearly immortal and invulnerable.

The panels of the comics gained notoriety following the release of Marvel's Avengers franchise, with Thanoscopter later appearing in fan art, memes and online petitions.
