Thailand Burger King's "Real Cheese Burger" refers to a product introduced by Burger Kings based in Thailand that markets itself as a "real cheese burger." The burger contains twenty slices of cheese between two buns. The food inspired disgust and curiosity, as well as memes on social media.
Origin
On July 9th, 2023, the Burger King Thailand Facebook page[1] announced the introduction of the "real cheese burger," a sandwich that is simply twenty slices of cheese between two hamburger buns. The post gained over 3,700 reactions in four days (shown below).
Spread
Over the following days, the dish was tried by Thai locals, who gave it mixed reviews on social media. On July 10th, Twitter user @RichardBarrow[2] said he was struggling to finish it, gaining over 100 retweets and 540 likes (shown below, left). Twitter[3] User @Taiki_taiki recommended against it, saying peoples' lives "weren't worth it," gaining over 45,000 retweets and 11,000 likes (shown below, right). On July 12th, the sandwich was covered by The Washington Post.[4]
The sandwich inspired some memes, particularly on Reddit. On July 12th, 2023, Redditor /u/Easy-Introduction56 posted a Family Guy meme about the burger to /r/dankmemes,[5] gaining over 4,400 points in one day (shown below, left). The same day, Redditor /u/ILikeCap also posted a meme about the sandwich to /r/dankmemes,[6] gaining over 1,600 points (shown below, right).
