The trend was popularized on TikTok in July 2024, leading to confusion from some users over what "IFB" means.

Origin

It is unclear who exactly started the teamwork trend, with videos referencing it first appearing on the app as early as mid-May 2024. For example, on May 21st, 2024, TikToker[1] @natalia.zimoch posted a video captioned "teamwork" explaining the idea behind the trend, specifically looking to get accounts with under 10,000 followers to the 10,000 follower mark (shown below). The video gained over 400,000 views in two months.

Spread

The acronym "IFB," meaning "I follow back," became increasingly popular among participants in the teamwork trend throughout July 2024. As the trend spread, some TikTokers began to post videos wondering what "IFB" means. On July 15th, 2024, TikToker[2] @acc8707 posted a video expressing their confusion, garnering over 1.5 million views in 10 days (shown below, left). On July 20th,TikToker[3] @xyzl0ll posted a video using the acronym, garnering over 350,000 views in five days (shown below, right).
