About

Tanic the Hedgehog is an infamous, fan-made Sonic the Hedgehog web series made by YouTuber Petur Wentzlau in 2008. The film became known in the Sonic fandom for its poor quality, inspiring many reactions in the 14 years since its release, as well as becoming a notable viral video.

Origin

On April 20th, 2008, Petur Wentzlau posted the first episode of Tanic the Hedgehog, an amateur film about a boy who meets a Sonic Original Character named "Tanic." The second episode was released shortly after. The videos have since been deleted as of June 2022, but they were reuploaded by other channels several times in the 14 years since it was first posted (repost by Tanic The Animated Fanfilm shown below).

Wentzlau also uploaded an image of the Tanic character to DeviantArt[1] on April 29th, 2008 (shown below).

Spread

The video remained relatively obscure for several years until 2015 when YouTuber[2] Chadtronic posted the first of his two reaction videos to the Tanic episodes. On May 30th, 2015, he posted his first reaction to the series, gaining over 1.2 million views in roughly seven years (shown below, left). On July 4th, he posted his reaction to the series' second episode, gaining over 729,000 views in seven years (shown below, right).

After Chadtronic's videos, Tanic began growing more notorious among the Sonic fanbase. On February 20th, 2020, Cr1TiKaL posted a reaction to Tanic, gaining over 800,000 views in two years (shown below, left).[3] On March 22nd, YouTuber Dumbsville posted a meme-filled parody of the Tanic video, gaining over 94,000 views in a similar timeframe (shown below, right).
