TALKING BOUT is an original sound on TikTok attributed to at least two popular trends from 2020. The sound, created by TikToker Frzyk,^[1] features a segment of the song "Facts" by BG Lil Pat & Bando HotHead.^[2] One trend attributed to the sound, My Parents Sleeping Thinking I Am Too sees TikTokers describe a "problem" or "perk" they claim to have via on-screen caption, as if they're going to detail it. The video then cuts to the TikToker dancing under a new caption revealing they don't know what it's like to have that problem/perk, usually encouraging viewers to ask a friend.^[3] Another trend, Problems With / Perks Of Being features a skit in which a TikToker pretends to sleep, playing the role of their parent, with a caption like, "my parents going to sleep thinking I am too". The video then cuts to a clip of the TikToker partying or doing something other than sleeping.^[4] As of November 5th, 2020, the sound has been used in over 447,000 videos.

On September 29th, 2020, TikToker frzyk uploaded a video set to the song "Facts" under an original sound titled "TALKING BOUT" (shown below). The video gained over 13,000 views in a month.

My Parents Sleeping Thinking I Am Too

It's unknown who started the trend. Some of the earliest versions were uploaded on October 6th, 2020, by TikTokers thea.kachoww^[5] and shmurdasmissus,^[6] gaining over 421,000 and 307,000 views in a month respectively (shown below, left and right).

Problems With / Perks Of Being

It's unknown who started the trend. On October 4th, 2020, TikToker iamavante^[7] uploaded a video captioned, "problems you have to deal with when you gotta big 🍆" (shown below). The video then cuts to a scene of him dancing, featuring the on-screen caption, "idk." The video gained over 413,000 views in a month and is one of the earliest instances of the trend.

Spread

Frzyk's sound spread quickly around the platform. In October of 2020 the sound saw increased use as TikTokers started applying it to multiple trends in videos gaining millions of views. On October 7th, TikToker safiyahhhhhhhhhh^[8] uploaded a video where she pretends to sleep, captioned, "my parents going to sleep thinking i am too" followed by a cut to a scene of her sitting in bed on her phone with the caption, "me at 3 am watching p0rn" (shown below, left). The video gained over 5.7 million views and 1.7 million likes in a month. On October 27th, TikToker graceamauraa^[9] uploaded a video featuring the on-screen caption, "problems with having every guy at ur school simp over you," before cutting to a scene with her mom cutting vegetables and the on-screen caption, "Idk ask my mom" (shown below, right). The video gained over 5.5 million views and 1.6 million likes in 9 days.
