About
Tails What The Fu- refers to a series of video edits based on a 2015 Sonic Adventure Let's Play video and subsequent animation recreating an aspect of it where Sonic says, "Tails, what the fu-" before the two characters transform into Sonic.exe and Tails.exe in a Friday Night Funkin' style as a song from the game's "Vs. Sonic.exe" FNF mod plays. The videos became popularized on YouTube around early March 2022.
Origin
On March 15th, 2015, YouTuber[1] runJDrun posted a video playing Soinc Adventure DX on the Dreamcast, occasionally offering humorous commentary in voices parodying the characters in the game. Around the 16:30 mark, the YouTuber acts out a comedic interaction between Sonic, Tails and Knuckles where Tails makes a sexual remark, saying to Sonic, "ain't no fun if the homies can't have none," followed by Sonic exclaiming, "Tails, what the fuck!?" (shown below).
On April 30th, 2016, YouTuber[2] runJDrun posted an animated version of this interaction by VTANIMATION, gaining over 235,000 views in six years (shown below).
On August 22nd, 2021, the Vs. Sonic.exe mod for Friday Night Funkin' was released on Game Banana,[3] featuring several stages against Sonic.exe and other .exe creepypasta characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog universe (shown below, left). On December 16th, YouTuber[4] RexP posted an edit of the VTANIMATION video where Sonic and Tails become their .exe variants after Sonic yells "Tails, what the fu-" and the song "Triple Trouble" from the mod plays, gaining over 237,000 views in three months (shown below, right).
Spread
Videos following the same format became increasingly popularized over the following months, often changing the poses that Sonic and Tails strike after the transition as well as the music, typically using other FNF songs. For example, on January 15th, 2022, YouTuber[5] rays confused cringe posted an edit, gaining over 129,000 views in two months (shown below).
On February 11th, YouTuber[6] Extra Fenix posted a version of the meme, gaining over 460,000 views in a month (shown below, left). On February 26th, YouTuber[7] JowhDev posted a version in the style of Tails Gets Trolled, gaining over 102,000 views in four days (shown below, right).
