Tacos Goku, formerly known as Taqueria Goku, refers to a taqueria in Oaxaca, Mexico that has a Dragon Ball theme and is named after the character Goku. The restaurant is well-known for its wall art depicting Goku slicing al pastor. Tacos Goku is a part of many restaurants with anime themes across Latin America. Photos of Tacos Goku originally went viral on Reddit in 2012. In the years following, memes and posts surfaced about the taqueria that relayed the stereotype that Mexico loves Dragon Ball, among other Latin American and South American countries.

Origin

Tacos Goku, formerly known as Taqueria Goku, has a page on Google Maps [1] as well as on the website Restaurant Guru.[2] Many photos and reviews are present on both pages. Tacos Goku is located at Av. Fuerza Aerea Mexicana, Antiguo Aeropuerto, 68050 Oaxaca de Juárez, Oaxaca, Mexico.

It is currently unknown what year Tacos Goku was founded. However, the earliest known post about the restaurant was a photo shared by Redditor[3] PuroMichoacan on September 2nd, 2012, to /r/mexico, showing an Imgur photo of a taqueria in Oaxaca, Mexico called Taqueria Goku (shown below). The post received over 140 upvotes in 12 years and it was later cross-posted to /r/dbz[4] on the same day.

Spread

On August 10th, 2017, Redditor[5] kibouhearts shared a new image of the taqueria to /r/dbz, showing that it'd been renamed Tacos Goku. The post received over 390 upvotes in seven years (shown below, left).

The restaurant's updated art continued to spread on Reddit, like a new photo shared by Redditor[6] Shreeder4092 to the /r/TwoBestFriendsPlay subreddit on July 18th, 2022, gaining over 240 upvotes in two years (shown below, right).

On February 14th, 2022, X[7] user @mrmiguelart shared an original artwork, showing characters from Neon Genesis Evangelion eating at Taqueria Goku, gaining over 128,000 likes in two years (shown below, left).

The art was later used in memes, like a tweet sent by X[8] user @GalaxyPeaBrain on September 24th, 2022, that captioned the image, "This is more sincere and culturally impactful for latinos than anything Disney has put out," gaining over 216,000 likes in two years (shown below, right).

Memes referencing Tacos Goku continued on Reddit[9] and X[10] in the early 2020s.
