About

T-Shirt Challenge, also known as Pajamas Challenge, refers to a social media challenge which involves a participant pulling the loose cloth of their T-shirt or pajama behind their back in order to reveal the size of their breasts. Originating from Vietnamese social media, the trend gained prominence on Twitter in January 2020 both in fanart and as a challenge.

Origin

While it has been established that the challenge originated among Vietnamese internet users in November 2019, the exact origin of the challenge is unknown. On November 27th, 2019, Taiwanese Facebook[1] page KATO ARMY 2.0 posted the first known viral Pajama Challenge post depicting a woman in a pink T-shirt gathering loose cloth behind her back, revealing the size of her breasts. The post received over 44,000 reactions and 4,800 shares in two months (shown below).

Spread

Starting on November 27th, the challenge received spread among Taiwanese internet users on Facebook, later also spreading to South Korea and Japan. For example, a November 28th, 2019, post by Facebook[2] user 林芛安 received over 790 reactions in two months (shown below). A December 16th, 2019, post by Twitter[3] user @HIEEY_HEIKA received over 370 likes in one month. On November 30th, 2019, Taiwanese online outlet COOL[4] reported on the challenge.

On December 20th, 2019, South Korean artist Uihyeon Chae (채군) posted a two-panel drawing of a woman in a loose T-shirt with "I Hide My Power" written on the chest participating in the challenge (shown below, left). The post received over 2,500 reactions and 4,000 shares on Facebook[5] and over 1,300 likes on Instagram[6] in one month. On December 25th, 2019, Japanese Twitter[7] user @BSue0807 posted a fan art of Riamu Yumemi from The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls inspired by the drawing (shown below, right). The tweet received over 10,200 retweets and 54,100 likes in one month.

The trend did not gain significant spread among English-speaking users until on January 22nd, 2020, Twitter[8] user @Haiyi_NEKO posted two photographs of herself taking part in the challenge, with the tweet receiving over 9,300 retweets and 49,100 likes in six days (shown below).

Starting on January 23rd, the trend received viral spread among English-speaking internet users, primarily on Twitter,[9][10] with users posting both fan art and their challenge photographs. In many posts, Uihyeon Chae's artwork was included for reference.
