SZA Pathological Liar, also known as SZA Lying, is a conspiracy theory that revolves around American singer SZA (Solána Imani Rowe) and the perception that she has made several dishonest or fake statements throughout her career. This theory initially gained traction among fans and circles in social media in February 2021 after the singer alleged she never owned a TV, which was quickly debunked by her fans who posted pictures of her house with a TV in the background. The theory spread over the following years and led to discussions about her authenticity, as well as jokes, parodies and other memetic content labeling the singer as a "compulsive liar."

Origin

On February 6th, 2021, SZA^[1] confessed she had never owned a television before asking for recommendations in a tweet (seen below), which amassed more than 58,000 likes and 2,900 reposts in four years (seen below).

The claim was debunked on the same day by X^[2] user @Jussdin_, who shared a screenshot of the singer's Instagram post showing a TV panel behind her (seen below), which garnered more than 10,000 likes and 514 reposts in four years.

On October 30th, 2023, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal,^[3] SZA confronted the ongoing narrative about the pathological liar theory, stating that the claims regarding her lies can be "high-key offensive." She cited specific instances, like her conflicting statements about not having a TV growing up and her supposed dislike for birthday cake.

The theory was fueled in subsequent years by various social media platforms where fans shared clips and statements from the singer that were later proven either to be a lie or not entirely true.

For instance, on November 7th, 2023, YouTuber^[4] SLOAN posted an essay video titled "SZA is a Pathological LIAR: EXPOSING Her LIES on AGE, EDUCATION, EX BOYFRIENDS and PLASTIC SURGERY." The video (seen below) received over 415,000 views and 13,000 likes in two years.

On June 25th, 2024, X^[5] user @doctorTeeTee posted a thread featuring several clips of SZA lying, which included "having crutches when she can literally walk with heels." The post (seen below) received more than 18 million views and 110,000 likes in a year.
