Surprise Trust Fall is public prank in which participants fall into random strangers asking to be caught before hitting the ground. The prank is based off the "trust fall" trust-building exercise in which one person is either blindfolded or closes their eyes before falling backward into another person or group of people in hopes that they will be caught.
Origin
In 2010, the Internet humor television show Tosh.0 began airing public prank sketches called "surprise trust falls," in which host Daniel Tosh would approach people in public and fall into them while yelling the phrase "trust fall!"
Spread
On March 3rd, 2010, YouTuber jhazzard314 uploaded a video featuring various surprise trust falls recorded around his school (shown below, left). On August 27th, YouTuber TheOriginalPWilly uploaded a montage of surprise trust fall pranks inspired by Tosh's videos (shown below, right).
On March 4th, 2011, YouTuber evilronin71 uploaded a video titled "Jesus's Surprise Trust Fall," in which a cross falls on a man during a wedding in a church (shown below, left). On July 24th, 2012 YouTuber Blake Grigsby uploaded a prank video titled "Trust Fall Attack," gaining over 1.79 million views in the first two years (shown below, right).
