Super Mario Bros. Film Cast Announcement Parodies refers to a series of memes using the design of cast announcement cards of the 2022 untitled Super Mario Bros. film. The format, in which images of people and characters are paired with names of characters from Super Mario and other franchises, gained popularity in late September 2021 following the official voice cast announcement.

Origin

On September 23rd, 2021, during a Nintendo Direct online presentation, Nintendo game director Shigeru Miyamoto unveiled^[1] the cast of the upcoming 2022 Super Mario Bros. movie (video shown below).

The announced cast is:

• Chris Pratt as Mario (shown below, left)
• Charlie Day as Luigi (shown below, center)
• Anya-Taylor Joy as Princess Peach (shown below, right)
• Jack Black as Bowser
• Keegan-Michael Key as Toad
• Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong
• Charles Martinet (cameo)

Starting on the same day, the design of the cast announcement cards was used to create parodies. On that day, Twitter^[2] user @Halzyn posted the earliest known viral parody based on the design, combining a photograph of streamer Jerma985 with the role of Mario. The post received over 6.600 retweets and 37,100 likes in four days (shown below, left). On the same day, Twitter^[3] user @LiquidGoth posted a card presenting actor-comedian Eric Andre as the voice of Gino. The post gained over 3,800 retweets and 32,200 likes in the same period (shown below, right).

Spread

In the following days, users on Twitter, Reddit, Facebook and other social networks used multiple parody memes using the design of the cards. For example, a September 23rd, 2021, post by Twitter^[4] user @alexisparade received over 6,000 retweets and 29,700 likes in four days (shown below, left). On September 24th, Twitter^[5] user @OfficialTox1d posted an Ankha Zone meme that gained over 40 retweets and 440 likes, with a September 25th repost by user @FirearmsRetro^[6] gaining over 260 retweets and 3,000 likes (shown below, right).

The format maintained its popularity in late September 2021, being used to pair people with potential roles in the upcoming Super Mario Bros. film and roles in adaptations of other video games such as Five Nights at Freddy's.
