Yes, But is a two-panel webcomic series that exposes everyday life absurdities and hypocrisies in a minimalistic manner by artist Anton Gudim. Launched in September 2020, the comic achieved virality on Instagram in 2021 and on Twitter in 2022.
History
On September 13th, 2020, Russian webcomic artist Anton Gudim posted[1] a collection of seven minimalistic webcomics captioned "Yes, but" (Rus. "Да, но") exposing everyday life absurdities and hypocrisies on his VK page Gudim. The post accumulated over 12,000 likes, 540 shares, and 350,000 views in two years.
On May 31st, 2021, Gudim launched an Instagram[2] account for the comic (_yes_but), with Gudim posting[3] translated versions of the first seven comics on the same day (three examples shown below). The first post gained over 22,200 likes in one year.
On April 3rd, 2022, Gudim launched a Twitter[4] account (@_yesbut_) for the webcomic, creating a dedicated VK[5] page on May 23rd, 2022.
In one year, the Instagram account gained over 500,000 followers, with the Twitter page accumulating over 330,000 followers in four months.
Highlights
On Twitter, multiple posts shared by the account went viral since its launch. On April 24th, 2022, Yes, But shared its first comic to go viral on Twitter,[6] which gained over 15,800 retweets and 283,000 likes in three months (shown below, left). On July 25th, 2022, the account posted another comic to go viral, with the post gaining over 31,000 retweets and 248,000 likes on Twitter[7] in one week (shown below, right).
In January 2022, Bored Panda[8] posted a collection of Yes, But comics by Gudim.
