We Never Learn, also known as Bokuben, is a Japanese shōnen manga and anime series following the story of a senior high school student Nariyuki Yuiga who is tasked to tutor three female students in subjects they are bad at. Following the premiere, the anime series gained a notable meme presence online.

History

On February 6th, the first issue of the shōnen manga We Never Learn (ぼくたちは勉強ができない Bokutachi wa Benkyō ga Dekinai), written and illustrated by Taishi Tsutsui, premiered in the Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine.^[1] The manga follows the life of a senior high school student and prestigious scholarship hopeful Nariyuki Yuiga who is tasked to tutor female students Fumino Furuhashi, Rizu Ogata and Uruka Takemono in math, literature and English.

On August 26th, 2018, an anime adaptation of the manga series was announced.^[2] The series premiered on April 7th, 2019, with a total of 13 episodes planned.^[1]

Reception

In February 2019, the manga series reached a total of two million print copies sold.^[3] The anime series maintained a 7.21 user rating on MyAnimeList as of June 26th, 2019, with over 17,700 user votes submitted.^[4] On IMDb, the series had a 7.2 user rating with 78 user votes as of June 26th.^[5]

Online Presence

Following the premiere of the anime series, it gained a notable presence in memes online, primarily in the /r/animemes subreddit.

Distressed Fumino

Distressed Fumino refers to a scene from episode nine of the series in which character Fumino Furuhashi rapidly changes her expression from that of excitement to that of deep distress. Online, a four-panel meme format based on the scene has been circulated, used in a similar manner to the Stressed Chika meme format.
