About

Totally Spies! is a French Canadian-American cartoon series created by Vincent Chalvon-Demersay and David Michel and produced by Marathon Media and Image Entertainment Corporation. The series centers around three teenage girls, Sam, Alex, and Clover, that live a double life as spies for the for the World Organization of Human Protection (WOOHP). As spies, they are sent on missions all across the world to foil the plots of crime lords and villains. The show took inspiration from Japanese animation and Shonen anime at the time, and drew parallels with Charlie's Angels.

History

Totally Spies! debuted on ABC Family on November 3rd, 2001,[1] before being moved to Cartoon Network in late 2003, with the show airing on the channel until 2012. The show would continue its run in Canada and France until March 1st, 2015, running for a grand total of 6 seasons and 156 episodes. The show's popularity spawned a spin-off series known as "The Amazing Spiez!," a comic series that was released monthly in Sweden, and a TV film that got a theatrical release in France.

Reception

Totally Spies! was released with mixed to positive ratings from critics. Praise was given to the show for pushing boundaries for a show targeted for girls in a genre mainly focused towards boys. Despite the show being targeted towards girls, there was shown to be quite a crossover between boys and girls watching the show. Some critics noted the show, while decently written for adults, "might give viewers the like, slightest headache."

Fandom

Totally Spies! boasts a decent following on Tumblr, with multiple blogs dedicated to the show along with showcasing fan art of the show.[2][3][4] The show also has its own community on Reddit, /r/totallyspies[5], and a Wikia.[6]

Fetish Fuel

One of the infamous aspects of the show was the amount of odd, paraphilia-esque transformations and situations the girls of the show would often get involved with. Such paraphillia's range from common ones, such as BDSM and Wet/Messy paraphilia, to internet paraphilia examples, such as Macrophillia, Inflation, and Food Play.

Laser Mirrors

An infamous moment in the show occurred in episode 23 of season 2. In order to escape their imprisonment, Clover utilizes her Laser Lipstick on a pair of mirrors to melt a whole in the door to allow her and Alexandra to escape. This moment is often mocked online for its animation and the bizarre, excessive nature of melting a hole in a door.
