The Young Pope is a television show directed by Paolo Sorrentino that airs on Sky Atlantic, HBO, and Canal+. It stars Jude Law and Diane Keaton and is about a fictional Pope played by Jude Law whose youth and conservative orthodoxy shakes the politics of Vatican City.
History
The Young Pope's first season was produced between 2014 and 2016.[1] Sorrentino wrote the script with Stefano Rulli, Tony Grisoni and Umberto Contarello. The Jude Law-lead cast was announced in the summer of 2015. The series premiered on October 17th, 2016 on Sky Atlantic in Italy, has premiered in various locations in Europe since, and will premiere on January 15th, 2017 on HBO in the United States. On December 5th, 2016, HBO released the trailer for United States audiences (shown below).
The New Pope
On May 16th, 2017, HBO announced the creation of a sequel to The Young Pope, named The New Pope.[11] John Malkovich was announced to be joining the cast on July 2nd, 2018.[12] On April 9th, 2019, paparazzi pictures of Jude Law filming the second season leaked online. The pictures show Law in a white speedo walking on a beach while women play volleyball around him (shown below).
Twitter users reacted thirstily to the pictures. User @NineDaves[13] wrote "Good morning to these photos of Jude Law filming THE NUDE POPE," gaining over 4,200 retweets and 22,000 likes (shown below, left). User @fuerticito posted the photos gaining 100 retweets and 460 likes (shown below, right). The photos were covered by Vogue,[14] Buzzfeed,[15] and The Daily Dot.[16]
Reception
The early reception to The Young Pope has been positive amongst critics. As of January 4th, 2017, it has an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes,[2] an 8.5 on IMDb,[3] and a 9.4 rating on TV.com.[4] Italian newspaper Famiglia Cristiana[7] argued that Law's portrayal of the Pope was too fantastical and that reaction was divided among Catholic audiences. The show has been renewed for a second season.
Online Presence
Two weeks before its American release, The Young Pope has a mild online fandom. Its Facebook page[5] has over 2,300 likes, and its subreddit[6] has 179 readers.
Weird Twitter Ironic Fandom
In the buildup to The Young Pope's American release, Weird Twitter developed an ironic fascination with the show, making jokes about its premise.
Song Lyric Jokes
On January 4th, 2017, Polygon[8] picked up a trend on Weird Twitter which inserted The Young Pope into popular song lyrics. The following day, Twitter Moments[9] and Uproxx[10] also posted articles about the trend.
