Overview
The Super Mario Bros. Movie: Replumbed is a crowdsourced remake of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in which scenes from the film are reanimated in different styles. A title reveal trailer and poster for the project were released in mid-October 2024, announcing a 2025 release date. Days later, the official @MarioReplumbed X / Twitter account was hacked or taken over by a rogue admin, who began making offensive posts to the account, leading to its suspension. At the same time, animators began dropping out of the project, citing mismanagement and unrealistic deadlines. Amid the controversy, rumors that the project was canceled began to surface, however, these appear to be false.
History
On October 11th, 2024, YouTuber[1] The Super Mario Bros. Movie: REPLAYED released a "title reveal" teaser for The Super Mario Bros. Movie: Replumbed, a fan reanimation and remake of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in the vein of remakes like Shrek Retold, in which scenes from the original movie are reanimated by a variety of amateur animators.
On October 12th, X[2] account @ToonHive shared the poster for the project, originally posted by the now-suspended official account for the project, @MarioReplumbed. The post garnered over 7,000 likes in six days.
Mismanagement Controversy / Hack
On October 16th, 2024, animators and people related to the project began making posts on X citing mismanagement of the project. That day, X[3] user @ToastWoomy posted a screenshot from the project's Discord, writing, "Lmao, Mario Replumbed’s host quit. What a shitshow," showing a member of the Discord asking the purported host of the project, D001, to return.
On the same day, X[4] user @MissGranva posted another Discord screenshot in which a user writes, "I'm going to say this as calm as possible, but some random person was givin admin and banned our host Curren. If you have any way to contact him or an idea to be able to get him back, please ping me in general."
Later that day, X[5] user @Lisnovski posted their reasoning for leaving the project, writing that "the managers don't know how to manage, they're all young kids that expected a poster to be made in 3 days, and the movie to be finished in 10 months," garnering over 47,000 likes in two days.
On October 17th, the @MarioReplumbed X page was hacked. The account began posting offensive memes, posts and shitposts. On that day, X[6] user @wiiudisks posted a cropped screenshot of a post by the account sharing a Mario goatse meme, writing, "the mario movie reanimated project is really going well with no flaws whatsoever," garnering over 16,000 likes in a day.
The hack led to the suspension of the @MarioReplumbed account and the deletion of the Mario Replumbed Discord server.
Rumors that the project was canceled began spreading that day.[7] However, on October 17th, X[8] user @KirboP73024, one of the project leads, made a post claiming the project was not canceled, writing, "We are going to restart this project from scratch, this time with better server, moderation, control quality, and good ambient."
