The Boys is a superhero comic series set in a world where superheroes exist, which follow a story of a group of vigilantes who oppose morally corrupt superheroes and "keep them in check." Following the premiere of the series' TV adaptation in June 2019, the series gained notable popularity in memes.

History

In October 2006, comic series The Boys created and written by Garth Ennis and co-created and illustrated by Darick Robertson was launched.[1] The series follow the story of a CIA Black Ops team consisting of characters Billy Butcher, Hughie Campbell, Mother's Milk, The Frenchman and The Female who oppose morally corrupt and criminal superheroes. A subplot of the series focuses on the story of Starlight, a recent addition to The Seven, a group of most renowned and revered superheroes.



TV Series

On June 26th, 2019, the first season of the TV adaptation of the series, developed by Eric Kripke, premiered on Amazon Prime Video,[2] starring Karl Urban as Billy Butcher and Jack Quaid as Hughie Campbell.

On November 8th, 2011, the /r/TheBoys subreddit was created.[3] During August 2019, /r/TheBoys became the 2nd fastest-growing subreddit according to SubredditStats.[4]

The Boys Sevenposting

On July 28th, Facebook group The Boys Sevenposting was created,[5] posting memes based on the scenes and references from the show in a similar manner to Marvel Shieldposting and other "-posting" Facebook communities.

The Deep Calendar

In August 2019, Amazon released a promotional calendar for July 2019 – June 2020 based on a photoshoot of The Boys character The Deep, portrayed by Chace Crawford.[6] On August 15th, 2019, Twitter user @james_lohan highlighted that in the March photograph of The Deep, an outline of his erect penis is distinctly visible through his costume (shown below, right).[7] In the following days, several news outlets reported on the gag.[8]

"If It Ain't the Invisible Cunt" is a quote said by character Billy Butcher upon starting a fight against invisible superhero Translucent. Online, a still image of Butcher paired with the quote has been used as a reaction, particularly towards invisible antagonists in various video games.
