T-Shirt Shirt is a high-end men's shirt designed and sold by the Spanish luxury fashion brand Balenciaga, which consists of a long sleeves button-up shirt attached to a short sleeves tee. Upon its release in May 2018, the t-shirt quickly became a subject of ridicule on the social media for its absurd design concept.

History

In May 2018, Balenciaga released the T-Shirt Shirt on its website, at the retail price of $1,290 USD. It is unclear when it was first posted to their website, but tweets from the Balenciaga Twitter account featuring the shirt appeared on May 9th^[1][2] (shown below).

The Balenciaga website^[3] features a page for the shirt, showing that it will retail $1,290.

Online Reactions

The shirt began generating responses on Twitter several weeks later. On May 26th, 2018, Twitter user @MallyMack_ tweeted images from Balenciaga's website of the shirt, gaining over 105,000 retweets and 186,000 likes (shown below, left). On the 27th, Twitter user @DianOnno posted pictures of other models in the shirt, gaining over 480 retweets and 2,200 likes (shown below, right).

Other Twitter users mocked the shirt by posting parody outfits of the shirt. For example, Twitter user @electrawaves posted pictures of her in two pants attached by a belt (shown below, left). User @AH_Mike posted a parody of the shirt and gained over 860 retweets and 5,800 likes (shown below, right). The reactions were covered by The Daily Dot.^[4]
