Stuart Little is a multimedia franchise, which includes a series of films, television shows and video games, based on a children's novel by E.B. White. The series follows the adventures of an anthropomorphic mouse who is adopted by a human family.

History

Book

E.B. White published the book Stuart Little in 1945 (cover below). The book went on to be considered a classic of children's literature.[1]

Film Adaptation

On December 17th, 1999, a live-action film adaptation of the book was released in the United States.[2] The film stars Michael J. Fox as the computer-animated Stuart Little (trailer below, left). Three years later, on July 19th, 2002, a sequel to the film was released in the United States (shown below, right).[3]

A second sequel, Stuart Little 3: Call of the Wild, was released direct-to-DVD in 2006.[4]

Television Adaptation

In 1966, an adaptation the novel narrated by late-night television host Johnny Carson was released in an episode of the television series Children's Theater (shown below).

In 2003, an animated television series based on the film series was aired but was canceled after one season.[5]

Reception

Upon its release, Stuart Little received generally favorable reviews. The New York Time[6]s said, "To say that "Stuart Little" is one of the best children's books published this year is very modest praise for a writer of his talent."

The first Stuart Little film also received positive reviews. On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes [7] the film received a 67% fresh rating (based on 96 reviews). In their critical consensus, they wrote, "Critics say Stuart Little is charming with kids and adults for its humor and visual effects." The film's special effects were also nominated for an Academy Award. Additionally, the film gross more than $300 million at the box office.[8]

Stuart Little 2 faired better with critics, receiving an 81% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes (based on 123 reviews).[9] However, the film grossed less at the box office, with a final tally of $169 million.[10]
