About

Some Good News, also known as SGN, is a web series hosted by actor John Krasinski. The show follows the format of a news program as filmed from within Krasinski's house during the coronavirus quarantine. Krasinski shares positive news stories and conducts interviews with celebrities and people with uplifting news stories. Since premiering on YouTube in March 2020, the show has been purchased by CBS for airing on CBS All Access, the network's streaming service.

History

On March 29th, 2020, the SomeGoodNews YouTube channel launched with an advertisement for the series. This first video, entitled "Sharing Some Good News," received more than 1.8 million views (shown below, left).

Later that day, Krasinski premiered the first episode of the series, which includes an interview with his Office co-star Steve Carrell. The first episode received more than 17 million views in less than two months (shown below, right).

Over the next month, the show continued to produce popular episodes. On April 5th, Krasinski published the second episode, which received more than 12.5 million views (shown below).

Acquisition By CBS

According to the Hollywood Reporter,[1] following a "massive bidding war," Krasinski sold the show to VIacomCBS. However, Krasinski will no longer host the series. He will remain an executive producer and "will have some sort of on-air presence."

In a statement Krasinski said:

Could not be more excited and proud to be partnering with CBS/Viacom to be able to bring Some Good News to so many more people! From the first episode, our goal was to create a news show dedicated entirely to good news. Never did I expect to be joining the ranks of such a historic news organization as CBS.

Reception

Since premiering the first episode on March 29th, 2020, the SomeGoodNews garnered more than 2.5 million subscribers in two months.

The New York Times[2] wrote of the series:

Mr. Krasinski presents heartening scenes, such as an I.C.U. team forming a conga line to celebrate a patient being taken off a ventilator or an elderly couple singing together, separated by a closed window; special correspondents like the actors Steve Carell and Brad Pitt discuss entertainment and the weather. (“Looks, uh, pretty good,” Mr. Pitt reports.)
