About

Sk8 The Infinity is an original shonen skateboarding anime series created by animation studio Bones and Hiroko Utsumi. The series was highly praised for its animation, enjoyable cast, story and attention to detail regarding skateboarding culture.

History

On September 13th, 2020, it was announced that Bones and Hiroko Utsumi were collaborating on a new project.[1] One week later, they announced Sk8 the Infinity (first trailer shown below).

The series is written by Ichirō Ōkouchi with music by Ryō Takahashi. The story follows Reki, an enthusiastic Japanese skateboarder, and his friend Langa, a Canadian snowboarder who falls in love with skateboarding and quickly learns how to do it at a high level. The pair compete at "S", an underground skateboard racing competition that is unofficially led by a mysterious and dangerous skater named "ADAM." Over the course of the show, the pair form friendships with the other skaters while ADAM attempts to woo Langa into an alliance.

Sk8 the Infinity debuted on January 10th, 2021 and completed its first season on April 4th.

Reception

Sk8 the Infinity was widely praised upon its release. The show has a rating of 8.03 on MyAnimeList[2] based on over 97,000 user votes. Polygon[3] wrote of the show, "SK8 the Infinity is building up to a sports anime show unlike few others: One that acknowledges the excitement of being able to share your passions with others, as well as the frustration of recognizing you may never be the best at what you love." UPressOnline[4] wrote, "This anime has an amazing original story and a great soundtrack, the outro, in particular, being very earworm-y, and I can’t wait to see where it goes next." YouTuber Mother's Basement posted a 30-minute video praising various aspects of the show, from the character designs to the art and music, saying that whatever one is looking for in a sports shonen anime, the will definitely find it in Sk8.

Online Presence

The day the anime was announced, a subreddit for Sk8 The Infinity, /r/sk8theinfinity[5] launched, gaining over 6,000 subscribers in 7 months. On YouTube, multiple videos have been made celebrating the show's dub (videos by Cocoa Butler and Prapo 237 shown below).
