About
Rimworld is a construction and management simulator video game developed by Ludeon Studios. After a five-year Kickstarter campaign, the game was released in October of 2018 to very positive reviews.
History
On October 2nd, 2013, creator Tynan Sylvester launched a Kickstarter campaign for the game Rimworld.[1] In the Kickstarter, Sylvester claimed the game would be inspired by The Sims and Dwarf Fortress, and would feature "an AI Storyteller (modeled after the AI Director from Left 4 Dead) who analyzes your situation and decides which event she thinks will make the best story. The game received over $268,000 from its Kickstarter campaign.
The purpose of the game is to have characters create a colony in a futuristic space setting and develop enough resources over time such that they can eventually leave the colony in a ship. Characters have different backgrounds and abilities, which affect their usefulness to the game's objective. After several Alpha and Beta releases, the game was officially released on Steam on October 17th, 2018.[2]
Reception
The game has a rating of "Overwhelmingly Positive" on Steam as of February 26th, 2019.[2] It has a score of 86/100 on Metacritic.[4] Critics lauded the game's unpredictability, with some praising it as the new gold standard for games of its genre. It was nominated for "Strategy/Simulation Game of the Year" at that year's D.I.C.E. awards.[3]
Online Presence
Rimworld developed a large fanbase over its years of development, and as of February 2019, boasts a subreddit with over 132,000 subscribers.[5] It also has over 12,000 likes on Facebook.[6]
