About
Resident Evil 4 Remake is Capcom's 2023 remake of the 2005 survival horror video game Resident Evil 4. As with the remakes of Resident Evils 2 and 3, the Resident Evil 4 remake upgrades the original's graphics and gameplay for the modern console generation. As the original Resident Evil 4 is one of the most critically acclaimed of all time, its remake generated significant buzz and hype online prior to its release.
History
Development on the Resident Evil 4 remake began in 2018, led by studio M-Two, though the development was later handed to Capcom's in-house team, Division 1.[1] The game was announced to be in development in April of 2020. The first reveal for the game occurred during the June 2022 "State of Play" presentation (shown below). The game is directed by Yasuhiro Anpo and Kazunori Kadoi and produced by Yoshiaki Hirabayashi. The game has a March 24th, 2023 release date.
Online Presence
News of a Resident Evil 4 remake was initially met with resistance from long-time fans of the game, as players largely felt the original was still very good and didn't need a remake. A February 2023 gameplay preview (shown below) caused complaints about the rain effects in the game. Capcom said they were working on a day one patch to make the game's rain less shiny.[2]
In mid-March of 2023, screenshots of the game's implementation of yellow paint to signify objectives and breakable items went viral on Twitter, causing debate between some fans who felt the yellow paint was obvious and broke immersion and developers who noted that without it, players would be lost.
Reception
Despite some controversies during the development period, the game was well-received by critics ahead of its release. As of March 22nd, 2023, the game has a score of 93/100 on Metacritic.[3] Many critics praised it as a gold standard of video game remakes, noting that it remained faithful to the original where it mattered while expanding and improving on certain aspects of the original.
