The PS5 Pro or PlayStation 5 Pro is a video game console that Sony revealed in September 2024 designed as a halfway step between the PlayStation 5 and the company's next-gen console. The device will be launched in November 2024 and promises to display more advanced graphics and the most demanding games at higher, more consistent frame rates. Upon its unveiling, the PS5 Pro was widely criticized and mocked by fans, many of whom expressed that it was overpriced at $699.99, while its predecessor was released in November 2020 priced at $499 with a digital-only edition for $399. Memes and other jokes poking fun at the console quickly appeared around the internet, largely referencing the pricetag and presentation by Sony.

History

On September 10th, 2024, Sony announced the PS5 Pro^[1] along with a video describing the features of the upcoming console. The PS5 Pro claims to offer an upgraded GPU with 67 percent more computing units than its predecessor console and 28 percent faster memory that will offer 45 percent faster rendering for gameplay, according to PlayStation. The demonstration video (seen below) amassed more than 2.7 million views and 89,000 likes in a day.

Sony also revealed that the console will be launched on November 7th, 2024, at the price of $699.99 for the base model, which notably lacks a disc drive for physical media.

Online Presence

The PS5 Pro announcement quickly became a viral topic on social media, sparking notable backlash for the console's price and perceived lack of "new" features that would justify its extra cost over the regular PlayStation 5.

For example, on September 10th, 2024, X^[2] user @antdude92 posted a parody mocking the PS5 and PS5 Pro comparison (seen below) by adding almost the same image on both sides. The tweet amassed over 42,000 likes and 4,500 reposts in a day.

On September 10th, 2024, Redditor^[3] mrnicegy26 posted a comparison between the launch of the PS5 Pro with the PS4 Pro (seen below), which received roughly 4,100 upvotes and 1,100 comments in a day.

TikTokers also posted memes and jokes about the PS5 Pro price tag, like TikTok user @type2show_plays_dbd,^[4] who shared a montage on September 10th, 2024, about the $699.99 overpriced console. The video (seen below) amassed roughly 16,000 plays and 1,4000 likes in a day.
