About
Poppy Playtime is a horror adventure game developed and published by MOB Games, and released on Steam on October 12th, 2021. The game takes place in an abandoned toy factory, with the player character being an ex-employee who has broken into the factory to find out what happened to the factory workers ten years ago.
History
On May 9th, 2021, a teaser trailer was released by MOB Games. The teaser trailer was viewed over 1.9 million times in seven months and features a fake tutorial on how to take care of a fictional doll called Poppy, in an older, VHS-style video (shown below).[2]
On September 1st, 2021, an official trailer was released which showed off some of the gameplay mechanics, as well as some of the game's enemies. The video, which was viewed over 1.2 million times in three months, also had secret messages in it that were found to later correlate to the overall plot of the story, needing the game's release to fully understand (shown below).[3]
Release
The game was released on October 12th, 2021, for the price of $4.99, to overwhelmingly positive reviews. Within two months of its initial release, it has received over 10,000 positive reviews on Steam, and countless videos on YouTube.[1] Due to the gameplay featuring a lumbering, slow enemy, called Huggy Wuggy in-game, chasing after you, it has been similarly compared to Five Nights At Freddy's and Bendy and the Ink Machine, though there are a few differences. The game fared very well with Let's Play YouTubers, with the YouTube channel CoryxKenshin[4] having their playthrough of the game, uploaded on October 13th, 2021, gain over 23 million views in two months (shown below).
Future Installments
On October 30th, 2021, the YouTube channel for MOB Games released a teaser trailer for chapter 2 of the game, still titled 'Poppy Playtime: Chapter 2'.[5] This teaser trailer was much more received than previous ones, earning over 7 million views in two months, making it the most viewed official video for the series (shown below).
