Overwatch Workshop is a feature in the multiplayer shooter game Overwatch which grants players access to a custom scripting system to make new game modes to play.

History

On April 24th, 2019, the PlayOverwatch YouTube channel released a developer update video titled "Introducing Workshop" (shown below). Within 24 hours, the video received more than 700,000 views and 8,500 comments.

Online Presence

That day, the announcement video reached the front page of the /r/Overwatch^[1] and /r/OverwatchUniversity^[2] subreddits. Meanwhile, Redditor BlueLightningTN submitted a post^[3] noting that "mass ressurection" could be readded to the game by players who know how to script it by using the Workshop. Also on April 24th, Redditor ChemicalWeather posted a video of a custom Workshop mod allowing the character Mei to surf along her ice trails (shown below).

On April 25th, the video game news site PC Gamer^[4] published an article titled "The Overwatch Workshop has already spawned great mods," highlighting several videos of modified Overwatch games using the Workshop feature.
