Osomatsu-San is a 2015 comedy anime series directed by Yoichi Fujita and animated by studio Pierrot. The third installment in late Japanese artist Fujio Akatsuka's comedy manga-anime franchise Osomatsu-Kun , the anime series was produced as a tribute to honor the legacy of the artist following his death in August 2008.

Premise

Osomatsu-San follows the lives of the Matsuno sextuplets ten years after their original appearance in the original Osomatsu-Kun manga. Now all grown up, the show follows the group's attempts to try and adjust to life, as well as their attempts to get a job.

History

Osomatsu-San was conceived as a sequel to the original Osomatsu-Kun gag comedy, written by Fujio Akatsuka on April 15, 1962 and ran for 34 volumes before ending on January 15, 1969. An anime adaptation based of the original manga, sharing the same name, also ran for 60 episodes from February 5, 1966 to March 25, 1967, and later for another 88 from February 13, 1988 to December 30, 1989. The Osomatsu-San anime revival, directed by Yoichi Fujita, also known for his work on the Gintama franchise, and animated by Studio Pierrot, most well known for their work on series such as Tokyo Ghoul and Naruto, was created to act as a memorial for the series' original author, who would have turned 80 that year, first airing on October 5, 2015.

Online Relevance

In North America, the Osomatsu-San anime is available for streaming on Crunchyroll^[1]. The series has gained a large online following on many sites, including on Tumblr^[2], Reddit's r/anime subreddit^[3], 4chan's /a/ (Anime and Manga) board^[4] and My Anime List^[5]. There are numerous sites that provide episodic information about the series, such as the Osomatsu-Kun wiki^[6], which has over 200 pages, TV Tropes^[7] and Anime News Network^[8]. In addition, the Osomatsu-San Facebook page also has over 4,000 likes^[9].

Fandom

The Osomatsu-San series has spawned a significant online fanbase since it's creation, which has created much fanart and fanfiction. On the Japanese fanart site Pixiv, there are over 85,800 images tagged under "おそ松さん"^[10], as well as over 6,000 videos on the video sharing website Nico Nico Douga^[11]. On DeviantART, there are also over 1,100 images tagged related to the series^[12].
