Ninja: Get Good: My Ultimate Guide to Gaming is a guidebook about getting better at gaming authored by Twitch streamer Tyler "Ninja" Blevins that was released in August 2019. After the book was reviewed by YouTuber Pyrocynical later that year, it became a subject of ironic memes, often being edited into various meme formats.
History
On August 20th, 2019, book publishing company Penguin Random House published Ninja: Get Good: My Ultimate Guide to Gaming, a 152-page gaming guide authored by streamer Tyler "Ninja" Blevins (cover image shown below).[1] The book contained a collection of tips for people inexperienced with gaming, such as advice on picking the right platform and equipment, in-game tactics and exercising prior to a gaming session.
On August 13th, 2019, gaming news website Polygon[2] reviewed Get Good, calling the guide "too general to be useful for most people."
On August 26th, 2019, YouTuber[3] Socksfor1 posted a video titled "I used Ninja "Get Good" book to Win a Fortnite Game," which received over a million views in five years. On October 6th, YouTuber[4] Pyrocynical posted a video review of the book titled, "I read ninja's terrible new book." The video (shown below) received over 6.6 million views in five years.
Online Presence
On January 13th, 2020, X[5] user @slazo posted the earliest notable meme referencing the book, an I Would Go to School If meme, that garnered over 940 reposts and 10,000 likes in five years (authorship unconfirmed; shown below).
In 2020 and 2021, the book appeared in a variety of meme formats. For example, on February 5th, 2020, Redditor Pilotly posted A Good Book Can Change Your Life meme about the book that garnered over 30,000 upvotes in the /r/okbuddyretard[6] subreddit five years (shown below).
The book continued being referenced in various memes in the following years. For instance, on June 25th, 2024, following the popularity of the What If Ninja Got a Low Taper Fade meme, TikTok[7] user 2zpurok posted a meme about BookTok that received over 290,000 likes in six months (shown below).
