About

New Pokémon Snap is the upcoming sequel to the 1999 N64 video game Pokémon Snap to be released on the Nintendo Switch on April 30th, 2021. The game is set in the Lental region and will feature Pokémon from all eight generations of games.

History

New Pokémon Snap was announced by Nintendo on June 17th, 2020. The first trailer for the game suggested that, like the original, New Pokémon Snap would be a rail-shooter, having the player move on a track through a level to take pictures of Pokémon, using items to trigger events and make certain Pokémon appear.

After the announcement, there was little news on New Pokémon Snap until January 14th, 2021, when Nintendo debuted a release date trailer, revealing the game would take place in the Lental region and be released on April 30th, 2021.

Online Presence

News of the game has been received positively by fans prior to release. After the release date trailer was posted, Twitter user @celestialnerd_[1] posted stills from the trailer, commenting on the "gorgeous" look of the game, gaining over 130 likes (shown below, left). The graphical quality displayed in the trailer led to comparisons between the game and Pokémon Sword and Shield, which was harshly criticized by some players upon release for its graphical and technical quality. User @TAHK0[2] pointed out that New Pokémon Snap's graphical improvement over Sword and Shield may be due to the smaller scope of the game and the fact it's a rail-shooter rather than an open-world game (shown below, right).
