About

Monstercat, formerly known as Monstercat Media is an independent record label founded in 2011 in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada by students Mike Darlington, Ari Paunonen and James Leusink (also known as Ephixa)[1] and is currently managed by Jonathan Winter (also known as Going Quantum), Mike Darlington, Ari Paunonen, and William Casarin. They release new songs on their YouTube channel every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, along with a weekly podcast beginning on March 20, 2014 and airing every Tuesday. Since its launch, Monstercat has accrued a large following on social media platforms and has had various releases on Youtube reach over 1 million views.

History

Monstercat was started on July 1st, 2011 by Mike Darlington and Ari Paunonen as a Youtube channel which served as a platform to share and promote music and was based in Waterloo, Ontario. To lessen competitiveness between the artists and provide new artists with a method of releasing their music, Darlington and Paunonen created compilation albums, the first of which, titled "Monstercat 001: Launch Week" was released on July 7th of that year. The first song on the label, and first upload to the Youtube channel, "Dubstep Killed Rock n Roll" by Ephixa (shown below), was uploaded to the channel on July 4th, 2011 and garnered over 2 million views over the next 5 years.

Since its launch, Monstercat has launched the careers of several artists on their roster, such as Project 46, who in 2012 debuted at #100 on DJ Mag's Top 100 DJs poll along with releasing an album with Ultra Music, and Krewella, whose single "Alive" gained significant radio airplay, peaking at #32 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In 2016, the label scored its first Billboard Hot 100 hit with Alone by future bass artist Marshmello, which debuted at 93[], with the official video for the song (shown below, left) becoming the most viewed video on their channel, surpassing the previous holder, the upload for the drumstep song Flight by Tristam and Braken (shown below, right), with over 50 million views in the past 5 months.

On January 3rd, 2018, Monstercat split their brand into two factions: "Uncaged," which focused on heavy hitting bass music, and "Instinct," which focused on mainstream, melodic sounding music. Such announcement saw the rebranding of the main YouTube channel to "Monstercat Uncaged" and the spawning of the channel "Monstercat Instinct."
