Marvel Snap is a 2022 digital collectible card game developed by Second Dinner for mobile platforms and Windows. In the game, players deploy characters from the Marvel Universe to gain and maintain control over in-game locations. Released in 2022, the game amassed communities on Discord and Reddit, spawning memes and other fan labor.
History
On October 14th, 2022, a gameplay trailer for then-upcoming digital collectible card game Marvel Snap, developed by Second Dinner and published by Nuverse, was released, gaining over 247,000 views on YouTube[1] in nine months (shown below, left).
On October 18th, 2022, Marvel Snap was released for mobile platforms and for Windows.[2] On the same day, a release trailer for the game was uploaded to YouTube,[3] where it accumulated over 706,000 views in nine months (shown below, right).
On August 22nd, 2023, Marvel Snap was officially released on PC (release trailer shown below).[12]
Gameplay and Features
Marvel Snap is a digital collectible card game similar to Hearthstone and Gwent. The players collect Marvel character cards with various abilities, building a fighting deck of 12 cards. The gameplay involves players deploying cards over six rounds, fighting over control over three locations.
Reception
On Metacritic,[4] the iOS version Marvel Snap had 85 rating with 25 critic reviews and 6.5 user score with nearly 40 user reviews as of August 2023. On Steam,[5] the game had a 83 percent approval rating with over 15,800 user reviews.
The game earned over $2 million in the first week.[6]
Fandom
Since its release, the game amassed a community of players online, with over 124,000 users joining the official Discord[7] server and over 162,000 users subscribed to /r/MarvelSnap on Reddit.[8]
On Reddit and Twitter, memes and other fan labor dedicated to the game have been shared since October 2022. For example, on December 22nd, 2022, Redditor gammalantern posted a What Did It Cost? Everything meme that received over 3,700 upvotes in /r/MarvelSnap[9] in eight months (shown below, left). On March 4th, 2023, Redditor zestyzazammm posted a Young Thug and Lil Dirk Troubleshooting meme that received over 5,500 upvotes in vie months (shown below, right).
Additionally, alternative card art of Marvel characters, known as "variants," both official and fan-made, has often gone viral on Twitter.[10][11]
