Kim Kardashian's "Kimono" Shapewear Line is a trademarked undergarment line by Kim Kardashian that drew criticism for appropriating the name of the formal traditional Japanese Kimono.

History

On June 25th, 2019, Kim Kardashian[1] tweeted, "Finally I can share with you guys this project that I have been developing for the last year. I’ve been passionate about this for 15 years. Kimono is my take on shapewear and solutions for women that actually work. Photos by Vanessa Beecroft" (shown below). The tweet gained over 7,200 retweets and 78,900 likes in a day.

Reception

On June 25th, 2019, Chrissy Teigen [3] responded positively to the line and Kardashian replied by saying, "I’m sending you the biggest package ever!!! Your gonna love!!!" (shown below, left). The exchange received over 24,100 likes and 450 retweets in a day. On June 26th, @mr2k4tr[4] replied to Kardashians announcement by saying, "This is "Kimono" I wear. Your underwear is very nice, but please do not register it as Kimono. Please do not monopolize our Japanese culture Kimono as your trademark. #kimono #KimOhNo" (shown below, right). The tweet gained over 2,800 likes and 500 retweets in a day. The hashtag #KimOhNo spread in reaction to the Kimono line.[2]
