History

On December 12th, 2024, during the The Game Awards ceremony, game studio Naughty Dog announce its upcoming sci-fi action-adventure video game Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, in development since 2020.[1] At the ceremony, the reveal trailer for the game premiered, with two uploads gaining over a million views on YouTube[2][3] in one day combined (shown below).

Gameplay and Features

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is an action-aventure video game following the story of Jordan A. Mun, a bounty hunter who ends up stranded on Sempiria, a distant planet whose communication with the outside universe was lost hundreds of years ago.

Online Reactions

Following the announcement of the game and the release of the reveal trailer, Intergalactic became a viral subject of discussions on social media. The choice of the protagonist, a Black Asian female bounty hunter with a shaved head, was one topic of discussions and memes on X and 4chan in the day following the game's release, with users also posting edits. Several edits referencing Avatar: The Last Airbender were circulated online during that period (example[4] shown below).

Multiple users made jokes about the director of the game Neil Druckmann, stemming from both far-left and far-right userbase dislike for the director for different reasons. For example, X[5] user @4ERESYOURLETTER posted an I'm Out! 1.3 Seconds image caption meme that received over 920 reposts and 9,800 likes in one day (shown below).

Other memes expressed disappointment that Intergalactic turned out to be one of the two expected major announcements made at The Game Awards ceremony together with The Witcher 4, proving the rumors of either Half-Life 3 being announced or news about Hollow Knight: Silksong's development or a Bloodborne remaster being shared wrong.
