Inside Out 2 refers to the 2024 Pixar animation film, intended as a sequel to the 2015 movie Inside Out. The animated film premiered in theaters in June 2024 with fairly positive reviews, inspiring discourse, fan art and memes, especially about the Anxiety character and the First Look at Inside Out's New Emotion Character exploitable meme.

History

Inside Out 2 was first announced during the Disney's D23 Expo on September 9th, 2022. The movie follows Riley, who just turned 13 and is about to enter high school. Her personified emotions (Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger and Disgust) have since created a new section of Riley's mind called "Sense of Self," which houses memories and feelings that make up Riley's core personality. The announcement^[1] (seen below) amassed more than 30,000 likes and 8,300 reposts in two years.

On November 9th, 2023, Pixar uploaded the first teaser^[2] of the sequel to its YouTube channel (seen below), which garnered over 25 million views and 411,000 likes in a year.

Online Reaction

Since the film was announced in September 2022, memetic and theories about its plot have been a viral topic on social media. For example, on November 9th, 2023, X^[3] user @Behind_Pics posted a redraw of Riley's emotions using the Family Guy family design (seen below, left), which garnered more than 39,000 likes and 2,500 reposts in a year.

On May 28th, 2024, X^[4] user @ScottieBeam posted a picture of Adam Sandler sitting on the floor alongside children, captioning "Me at the theater for Inside Out 2." The post (seen below, right) received roughly 119,000 likes and 26,000 reposts in a month.

Criticism of Film

Inside Out 2 received positive reviews from critics, holding a 91 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes^[5] based on 221 reviews. The film has grossed $294 million worldwide on its first weekend released in theaters.^[6]

Anxiety

Anxiety is a character from the Pixar animation sequel Inside Out 2. Anxiety is voiced by American actress Maya Hawke, was first introduced in a trailer in early November 2023 and is one of the new emotions that will be central in the film. Anxiety's reveal quickly inspired fan art and memes on X / Twitter and TikTok.

First Look at Inside Out's New Emotion Character

First Look at Inside Out's New Emotion Character refers to a series of exploitable memes using the catchphrase "first look at Inside Out's new emotion" over comedic, memetic images unrelated to Inside Out 2's actual new emotion, Anxiety, portraying the shown image as the new emotion. The earliest example of the meme was posted to X, formerly Twitter, in mid-November 2023 and inspired new variations over the course of the month.
