About

Home Alone refers to a 1990 family home invasion film and motion picture franchise about a young boy who protects his family's property from a band of thieves. The film inspired several sequels, a pair video games, novelizations and a reboot for the Disney+ streaming service. The first film remains one of the highest-grossing films of all time.

History

The first Home Alone film was released on November 16th, 1990. Starring Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern and Catherine O'Hara (trailer below).

Sequels

The film's stars returned for the first sequel Home Alone 2: Lost In New York, which was released on November 20th, 1992 (trailer below, left). It would be the last time the original cast would appear in a sequel.

Home Alone 3 arrived in theaters five years later on December 12th, 1997. The film featured a new cast and a new set of characters (shown below, right).

A final made-for-TV sequel was produced in 2002. Home Alone 4: Taking Back the House returns to the primary characters from the first two films but recasts the original actors.

Reboot

On August 7th, 2019, in an earnings call with investors, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that the company would be producing a reboot of Home Alone for the Disney+ streaming service.[1] He said that they would be "reimagining" films from the Fox library, which Disney acquired in 2018. Additionally, the company would be rebooting, among other titles, Home Alone, Night at the Museum and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

On August 7th, Macaulay Culkin, the star of the original two Home Alone, tweeted a photograph of himself surrounded by food. He captioned the post,[2] "This is what an updated Home Alone would actually look like." Within 24 hours, the tweet received more than 600,000 likes and 108,000 retweets (shown below).


Culkin followed the tweet[3] with a message to Disney: "Hey @Disney, call me!" Within 24 hours, the tweet received more than 59,000 likes and 4,000 retweets (shown below).

Video Games

Video game adaptations of the first two Home Alone films were released for a variety of consoles, including the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo, PlayStation 2, GameBoy, Sega Genesis and more. On December 17th, 2018, YouTuber James Rolfe, also known as the Angry Video Game Nerd, published negative reviews of the games on YouTube. The reviewes were originally published in 2007. The post received about 3.6 million views in a little over 10 years (shown below, left).

10 years later, on December 15th, 2018, series star Macaulay Culkin joined the Angry Video Game Nerd for another review of the games. The post received more than 6.1 million views in less than one year (shown below, right).
